SKOPJE WHISKEY

FEST

Whisky tasting festivals are a common feature of major world metropolises, and in 2019 Skopje joined this global map. Skopje Whisky Fest is not merely a whisky festival, but a celebration for hedonists—an event that elevates the mood of its audience and positions itself as a significant festival within the region. The festival’s mission is to raise the level of whisky culture and support the development of the whisky segment in North Macedonia, while enriching everyday life through whisky education.

At Skopje Whisky Fest, visitors can taste a wide selection of whisky brands from renowned distilleries around the world, including American bourbons, as well as Scotch, Irish, and Japanese whiskies. The festival attracts whisky enthusiasts, urban audiences, the HoReCa sector, and the business community. Last year, the festival welcomed more than 1,500 visitors. In addition to whisky, complementary products such as chocolates, appetizers, and non-alcoholic beverages are also showcased.

Industry professionals from importing companies present the brands and characteristics of the whiskies, while masterclasses are led by regional and international whisky ambassadors. The festival actively promotes social responsibility principles, including whisky patrols that encourage responsible drinking and recommend leaving vehicles behind. Opened bottles are auctioned, with proceeds donated to humanitarian causes. In the spirit of sustainability, all glass packaging is recycled.

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE VISITING SKOPJE WHISKEY FEST ’25

Whiskey festivals are held in almost all major metropolises worldwide and across our region. This autumn, Skopje will host the fourth edition of Skopje Whiskey Fest. Visitors will have the opportunity to taste a wide variety of whiskies and other alcoholic beverages from the portfolios of all major distributors in the country—some well-known to the public, and others rare and unique, sure to spark particular interest among whisky connoisseurs and enthusiasts. As organizers, it is our responsibility to provide you with a few guidelines, tips, and suggestions to help you make the most of your visit to this year’s Skopje Whiskey Fest.

1. Whiskey Tasting Glass

With each purchased ticket, you will receive one branded tasting glass. The tasting portion is 30ml—enough to sample each type of whisky. After each tasting, please ask the presenters to rinse your glass to avoid mixing flavors. Between tastings, make sure to drink enough water, which will be available at designated stations throughout the festival hall.
Keep your tasting glass with you during the festival, and feel free to take it home as a souvenir from Skopje Whiskey Fest.

2. Make the Most of Your Whisky Experience!

With the wide variety of offerings and the exciting program to be announced, you’ll want to make the most of your time at the festival. Get ready for lots of learning, chatting, and fun over these festival days!

3. Dress Appropriately – “Dress to Impress”

Whisky festivals are, by nature, a celebration of luxury. We recommend attending in style—please dress appropriately, at a minimum in smart casual. You don’t need to wear a tuxedo, but your outfit should match the elegance of the event. Dressing casually or inappropriately may be seen as disrespectful to other guests and exhibitors.

4. Your ticket is for entry to the event, not for measuring how much you can drink.

We understand that some guests might feel tempted to drink more than they can handle just because they bought a ticket. Instead, see it as an opportunity to sample a variety of whiskies in a welcoming environment and to learn from trained professionals who will guide you through the world of whisky.

5. Stay Hydrated – Drink Plenty of Water!

This might go without saying, but even though each tasting is only 30ml, it’s still quite a bit of alcohol. Be sure to drink enough water between tastings, or add a little water to your whisky to help unlock its unique aromas.

6. Prepare Yourself

The festival isn’t about how much you can drink—it’s about how much you can enjoy something new. Tasting comes first, drinking second. Sample as much as you like, then pick the brand you enjoy most and savor it.
For safety, the organizers will make sure visitors don’t drink too much. If the staff sees that you’ve had too much, you’ll be asked to leave the event, and tickets will not be refunded.
A friendly tip: avoid drinking any alcohol, even a little, before coming to the festival.

7. See What Other Activities Are Planned

Whisky festivals offer a wide range of activities, from specialty food stands to live music. Drinking whisky nonstop for hours isn’t a good idea. Take a break and check out all the other things happening in the festival hall.

8. Explore and Learn Before You Go!

With so many exhibitors and brands, it’s a good idea to explore the brands ahead of your visit. All participants and brands will be featured on the festival’s official website. You’ll also get a flyer or catalog with the full drink selection before the event starts.
You can also join some of the masterclasses held in separate rooms, in small groups of up to 25 people.

9. Don’t Be That Type of Guest…

Don’t skip the line or insist on being served the most expensive or oldest whisky. This shows disrespect to the exhibitors, the brands, and other guests. Remember, price and age don’t always determine the quality of the whisky. Be patient, wait your turn, ask a few questions about the exhibitor’s offerings, take your tasting glass, step back, and enjoy!

10. Don’t Hesitate to Ask Questions.

Many exhibitors have knowledgeable staff at their booths, and they’re there to teach you. Ask about the history of the whisky you’re tasting and what makes that brand unique.
Pro tip: Being polite and curious might even earn you a “secret tasting” of a special whisky from the exhibitors!

11. Meet People and Make Connections.

Besides the exhibitors, many festival attendees are highly knowledgeable about whisky. The festival gives you a chance to meet new friends who are happy to share their experience. Skopje Whiskey Fest is a place to exchange knowledge and make new connections.

12. Give Every Brand a Chance.

You likely already have a favorite whisky brand. But don’t forget to try some of the lesser-known brands—they may pleasantly surprise you with their quality and unique stories.
